Artificial Intelligence in Nursing Education: Knowledge and Utilization Among Students of Makurdi College of Nursing Sciences, Benue State, Nigeria.

This study examined the knowledge and utilization of artificial intelligence (AI) among nursing students at Makurdi College of Nursing Sciences (MCONS), Benue State, Nigeria. A descriptive cross-sectional design was employed, and data were collected from 146 students using structured questionnaires administered electronically via Google Forms. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 25. Hypotheses were tested regarding the influence of gender and academic level on AI knowledge and perception, as well as the correlation between AI utilization and perception. Findings revealed no significant differences in AI knowledge and perception across gender and academic levels. However, there was a statistically significant moderate positive correlation between AI utilization and perception, suggesting that increased use of AI is associated with more favorable attitudes. Students demonstrated a high level of knowledge about AI in nursing education (cluster mean = 4.36) and a moderate extent of AI tool utilization (cluster mean = 3.29). They also reported a moderate level of barriers to AI adoption (cluster mean = 3.27) and held a strong positive perception of AI integration in education and clinical practice (cluster mean = 4.01). Respondents acknowledged the potential of AI to support clinical decision-making and reduce workload through tools such as ChatGPT and medical AI software. However, the study identified gaps in structured AI training and challenges related to infrastructure and accessibility. Based on these outcomes, the study recommends incorporating comprehensive AI education into the nursing curriculum, enhancing faculty training, improving infrastructure, and promoting AI as a supportive—not replacement—tool in nursing care. Addressing cost and access issues and pursuing further research are also advised. Therefore, Nigerian nurses are ready to use AI in practice, and the need to integrate it smoothly must be prioritized by interventions.

Without doubts, the integration of AI tools into the Nigerian education has the potential to transform the educational landscape by providing outstanding solutions to existing challenges and improving the quality and accessibility of education (Fawaz, 2023). Therefore, the nursing profession in Nigeria is now better positioned than ever to leverage these technologies for more efficient and effective healthcare delivery. To the nursing profession, the significance of this study highlights how AI can improve nursing training through personalized learning, virtual simulations, and clinical decision support tools. Bridging the knowledge gaps by identifying students AI level of awareness which will aid in Curricula development of AI-driven learning environment. AI-driven skill development is essential in its utilization, which is important in building future nurses with critical thinking technological-driven abilities in decision making. To the healthcare providers, AI in nursing education ensures that graduates increasingly become efficient in clinical documentation, drugs administration, reduce workload and errors. At the same time in active utilization of AI-Power diagnostic tools, electronic health records (EHRs) for 8 efficient patient outcome. This is sacrosanct in addressing healthcare shortages, increasing technical know-how, and producing competent nurses. To the society, well-trained AI-empowered nurses will contribute massively to the implementation of public health for all ages according the SDG Goal 3 by 2030, (United Nations, 2015). This is possible because, AI-driven healthcare reduces costs by minimizing errors, optimizing resources, and improving healthcare delivery in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of public health global issues.
